Cluster
Chronic Daily Headache Posttraumatic Occasional Headaches Medication Overuse Headache
The exact causes of cluster headache have not yet
been positively identified. A genetic
basis has not been proven. It is suspected that cluster headache may occur due to dysfunction in the hypothalamus. Risk factors for the development of chronic daily headache include obesity, medication use/overuse, sleep disorders, snoring, and stressful life events. Posttraumatic headaches most commonly occur after whiplash injuries due to motor vehicle accidents, but can also occur after any sort of blow to the head. These headaches may be temporary. Head injury with loss of consciousness is more likely to cause prolonged posttraumatic headache. Millions of people suffer from occasional headaches that are not repetitive or debilitating, and can be relieved with over-the-counter medication. According to the American Council for Headache Education, in the past year 90% of men and 95% of women have had a headache. Taking over-the-counter medication, especially those containing caffeine, on a frequent basis, can result in frequent headaches. Recommendations are not to take over-the-counter medications more than 15 days a month. Taking prescription analgesics more than nine days a month is also a risk factor for the development of medication overuse headache. ![]()
