Stroke
Stroke and Women
Women under the age of 45 who have migraine without aura are at a slightly increased risk for stroke. This risk is further magnified if you smoke, or if you take oral contraceptives.
Women who have migraine with aura have twice the risk of heart attack or stroke than do women without aura or without migraine, and should avoid oral contraceptives, which further increases this risk.
There may be subsets of migraineurs who carry more risk than others, and more research is needed in order to identify who may be at risk.
